Conducting Masterclass with Mat Davis (observer places)
Book nowCome and observe a conducting masterclass and gain insight into conducting techniques and skills.
About the event
* For Loughborough University students and staff only *
We are delighted to offer the chance to observe a practical conducting masterclass led by professional conductor and LU Arts music tutor Mat Davis, in collaboration with LSU Classical.
The session will take the form of a live, ensemble-based workshop, where a small number of student conductors from LSU Classical will gain hands-on conducting experience with an instrumental ensemble under Mat’s guidance. Each participant will lead the group and receive real-time feedback on technique, communication, and rehearsal approach.
There are a limited number of observer places available to students and staff across the University, particularly those involved in music and performance-based societies.
As an observer, you will gain insight into:
- conducting gesture and baton technique
- rehearsal strategy and ensemble communication
- score interpretation and translating musical ideas into physical direction
- common challenges faced by emerging conductors and how to address them
This is an excellent opportunity to develop your understanding of ensemble leadership – particularly relevant for those involved in band, orchestra, choir, theatre, or any group where directing performers is part of the process.
Please note:
- This is an intermediate-level session and assumes some familiarity with ensemble performance
- Observer places do not include the opportunity to conduct
- Spaces are limited and booking is required
Who can attend?
Open to Loughborough University students and staff, particularly those involved in music or performance-based societies.
If you’re interested in conducting, directing, or simply want to better understand how ensembles are led, this session offers a valuable opportunity to observe a professional musician working in a live rehearsal setting.
