About the event
Come and hear about the positive power of literature in times of crisis in this discussion panel event focusing on Hope. The star-studded panel includes three-time British Fantasy Award winner Laura Mauro; bestselling children’s author Clémentine Beauvais; singer, songwriter, choreopoet and more Carol Leeming MBE; and prize-shortlisted feminist author Wendy Sacks Jones.
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and the opportunity to socialise afterwards.
About the panel
Dr Clémentine Beauvais is a children's author, literary translator and Professor of Educational Sciences at the University of York.
Laura Mauro was born and raised in London and now lives in Oxfordshire. Their short story Looking for Laika won the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction in 2018, and Sun Dogs was shortlisted for the 2017 Shirley Jackson Award in the Novelette category. Their debut collection, Sing Your Sadness Deep won the 2020 British Fantasy Award for Best Collection, and their short story The Pain-Eater’s Daughter won the 2020 British Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction. They like Japanese wrestling, Finnish folklore and Russian space dogs. They blog sporadically at lauramauro.com.
Carol Leeming MBE FRSA is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Leicester working across poetry, music, performing arts and digital media. Carol is a part time lecturer at De Montfort University and was awarded an honorary degree from Loughborough University in 2025.
Wendy Sacks Jones is a journalist and writer. As Wendy Jones she was a BBC education correspondent, Today programme reporter and current affairs presenter. She turned into a BBC suit for a few years (as deputy company secretary and then head of education policy), but left to go freelance, co-found an education charity, National Numeracy, and write.
She’s on the board of the writers’ organisation, 26, has co-edited a book about the prison charity, Fine Cell Work, and volunteers teaching English to refugees. She lives in south London with her husband and has three grown-up children. Her debut novel. The Candidate's Husband was published in 2025.
