The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark for recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and internationally.
The award recognises the dedication and expertise of the team responsible for maintaining the University's extensive grounds. Loughborough’s East Midlands campus is home to a variety of habitats and open spaces, including a Walled Garden, lake, two ancient woodlands, streams and species-rich grasslands.
These landscapes are cared for by a team of 18 gardeners and an arborist, who work year-round to create an attractive, accessible and biodiverse environment for students, staff and visitors.
Rich Fenn-Griffin, Deputy Grounds Manager, said: “The team does an incredible job making our 523-acre site of formal gardens, shrub beds, parkland, ancient woodland (to name a few), look fantastic. Whilst myself and Graeme Farmer provide the leadership, the team of passionate professional gardeners and groundskeepers translate this into results on the ground.
“This has been our best Green Flag year to date with our highest score. We've changed so much in a short space of time and with the continued energy and enthusiasm of the team we hope the campus will develop as a fantastic resource for staff and students to enjoy, as well as the local community.”
