What is Maia and how you can get involved

Have you heard the word ‘Maia’ mentioned around campus, but aren’t sure what it is? Maia is Loughborough University's Women's Network, established in May 2020 to bring together women, including trans women and non-binary people comfortable in a female-centred community.

Created during the Covid-19 pandemic, the network provides an inclusive space to connect, share experiences, support one another, and build a sense of community during a period of isolation.

Since its launch, Maia has grown rapidly to more than 550 members. Named after Claudia Sydney Maia Parsons, a pioneering Loughborough alumna and the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by car, the network reflects her spirit of ambition, determination, and achievement. Maia's purpose is to foster an inclusive and supportive community, create meaningful events and initiatives, and advocate for positive change to advance gender equity across Loughborough University.

Who is Maia for?

Maia unites women staff and Doctoral Researchers, including trans women and non-binary people comfortable in a female-centred community, across Schools, Professional Services and Loughborough Students' Union. Gender equality is a human right, not a female fight, and so Maia welcomes engagement from all colleagues, regardless of gender.

Oli Hooper, Maia Allyship Voice, said: “For me, Maia provides an important space for learning, reflection and action, encouraging all of us to consider how we can help create a more inclusive and supportive workplace. Being involved has enabled me to connect with colleagues from across the institution, hear diverse perspectives and contribute to initiatives that aim to foster positive change. It is a rewarding opportunity to learn from others while helping to promote a culture of belonging and respect.”

Committee opportunities

Maia are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to help shape their activities and represent the interests of their members. Whether you're passionate about events, advocacy, operations, or ensuring different staff voices are heard, they'd love to hear from you.

Gemma Towle, Maia Co-Chair, commented: “Being on the Maia committee has given me the opportunity to work closely with a fantastic committee of supportive, passionate people who bring different perspectives and ideas. I find such value in helping to create opportunities that bring people together, spark conversations and occasionally tempt people away from their inboxes for an hour!

“The role has also given me the chance to advocate for issues that matter to women across the University and to contribute to initiatives that can make a positive difference to people's experiences at work.”

Kat Halliday, Maia Co-Chair, added: “The role has given me opportunities to develop skills that I would not normally gain in my day-to-day job, including working across teams and engaging with colleagues in senior management. Alongside my passion for representing and advocating for those who identify as female within the Loughborough workforce, the experience has significantly boosted my confidence and expanded my skill set. It has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally while helping to create a more inclusive and supportive workplace. Win-win!”
