Food waste collections will start for most properties in the borough week beginning 2 November 2026.
Ahead of collections starting, food waste caddy packs will be delivered to households over a four-week period from today.
Caddy packs will be left at the kerbside, and they need to be taken inside, ready for when the service gets underway later this year. If you live off campus in a block of flats, you may not receive a caddy pack just yet. This is because properties which share a bin store, like flat blocks, are joining the service next year.
Weekly food waste collections are being introduced to meet the Government’s Simpler Recycling rules, which require all councils in England to collect food waste separately. The changes aim to reduce the amount of waste in black bins and cut carbon emissions.
The collected food waste will be taken to an anaerobic digestion facility where it is used to generate a renewable form of energy called biogas. The process also produces nutrient-rich fertiliser for farms.
