UK SCALE, MTC and Argon & Co Launch Strategic Partnership to Strengthen UK Supply Chain Innovation

Business and economy

Loughborough University’s UK Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence (UK SCALE) Centre has announced a new strategic partnership with The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and Argon & Co, strengthening the UK’s capability to address complex supply chain challenges through coordinated research, innovation and industry collaboration.

The partnership brings together complementary strengths across academia, applied manufacturing and strategic implementation. By aligning world-class research expertise with hands-on technological capability and real-world delivery experience, the collaboration aims to translate insight into impact – supporting organisations to improve resilience, productivity and sustainability across their supply chains.

Professor Janet Godsell, Dean of Loughborough Business School and Director of UK SCALE Centre, said:

“Supply chain challenges do not sit neatly within organisational boundaries, so the solutions cannot either. This partnership brings together academic research, applied technological capability and implementation expertise to create a more joined-up national capability for supply chain innovation. Through UK SCALE’s role as a convener, and our connection to the MIT Global SCALE Network, we are creating stronger pathways to move insight into action – helping organisations build supply chains that are more resilient, productive and sustainable.”

Based at Loughborough Business School, UK SCALE Centre provides academic leadership in supply chain research, modelling and policy engagement, alongside the development of future talent through its education programmes and its membership of the MIT Global SCALE Network. Through this new partnership, that research capability will be further connected to MTC’s advanced manufacturing demonstrators, pilot facilities and applied R&D expertise, as well as Argon & Co’s strategic advisory and implementation experience working with organisations across sectors.

Steve Smith, Director, Industrial Transformation Group at the MTC, added:

“This partnership is about working closely with Manufacturers and SMEs to strengthen their supply chains and prepare them for technology adoption. By bringing together research, industry expertise and practical support, we help businesses build capability, improve robustness and resilience, and identify the right technology solutions for their needs. The impact is to reduce risk, build confidence and help to translate innovation into real operational improvement, fast.”

Together, the partners will work on challenge-led projects that move from fundamental research through applied testing to implementation within operational environments. Activities may include collaborative research, pilot initiatives, joint funding bids, advisory projects, thought leadership outputs and co-branded industry events. The model is intentionally flexible, enabling the right combination of expertise to be mobilised depending on the nature of each challenge.

Judith Richardson, Associate Partner at Argon & Co, commented:

“In today’s volatile and uncertain world, supply chain leaders need to be able to move rapidly from insight to implementation. Argon & Co’s proven experience translating strategy into operational reality complements Loughborough University’s research leadership and MTC’s applied manufacturing capability, to help organisations turn innovation into scalable, sustainable change. It’s about embedding resilience, productivity and sustainability into day‑to‑day supply chain decision‑making, not as abstract concepts, but as measurable outcomes.”

The partnership is designed to strengthen national supply chain capability by accelerating the progression of ideas from concept to application, supporting SMEs and industry partners to adopt innovation with confidence, and ensuring that research insights are translated into scalable, industry-ready solutions. It reinforces UK SCALE’s role as a convenor – bringing together academic, technological and commercial perspectives to deliver impact across industry and policy – and reflects a shared ambition to deliver practical, measurable outcomes for UK supply chains.
