As a continuation of the established research collaboration between University Malaya and Loughborough University, Dr Andrew Farnworth was hosted by Dr Aik Hao Ng for a two week visit to University of Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The visit provided an opportunity to see the clinical work being carried out at UMMC to integrate Seracam within nuclear medicine and radioguided surgery, including the real-time gamma-optical video imaging capabilities developed through an AKT project at Loughborough University.
Real-time Seracam imaging was completed within two radioguided sentinel lymph node biopsy surgical procedures, providing a unique opportunity for ARAMP to be a part of cutting-edge surgical research as it was carried out. This demonstrated the progress of the surgical integration work led by Dr Aik Hao Ng and helped identify areas for the future development of intraoperative imaging technologies.
Alongside the surgical imaging work, Andrew collected Seracam data across UMMC's nuclear medicine and radiotherapy services for several isotopes that have not yet been fully investigated. These data will support further research at Loughborough University.
The visit further strengthened the research links between UMMC and Loughborough University. In-person collaboration provided an important opportunity for knowledge exchange and for exploring how small, mobile gamma-optical imaging systems can be integrated effectively within complex clinical pathways. It also demonstrated the potential clinical value of these technologies in real-world healthcare environments.
