AURPO 2026

Tom Kimber received an Early Careers Professional Award as ARAMP researchers presented at the 2026 AURPO Annual Conference in Glasgow.

Tom receives his AURPO Early Careers Professional Award.

ARAMP was well represented at the Association of University Radiation Protection Officers (AURPO) Annual Conference, held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow on 22–23 September 2026. AURPO brings together radiation protection professionals working across universities, research organisations and associated sectors, with its Annual Conference providing a forum to share practical experience, technical developments and research.

Tom Kimber received an AURPO Early Careers Professional Award, supporting his attendance at the conference. This is an amazing achievement for Tom, who graduated from Loughborough in July 2026 after completing his final-year research project on radiation shielding under Jenny Spiga's supervision within the ARAMP group. Tom also contributed to an invited presentation on “Applications of AI in radiation detection and dosimetry” given by Sarah Bugby.

Sarah's talk provided an overview of applications of AI and computational optimisation across radiation detection and dosimetry. As part of this, Tom presented his undergraduate project titled “Multi-Objective Optimisation for Nuclear Microreactor Shielding Design with Geant4”, which applies computational swarm optimisation to radiation shielding design. Rae Denham, joined by Andrew Farnworth, also gave an invited talk on “Practical Needlestick Assessments”. Their presentation covered our ongoing work investigating radioactive needlestick injuries, including how much radioactive material may be deposited following a puncture and how the resulting dose can be assessed.

We look forward to working more closely with AURPO and its radiation protection community in the future.
