Gambling Observatory at Loughborough (GOAL)

An interdisciplinary research centre focused on investigating gambling behaviour, and understanding, preventing, and reducing gambling-related harm.

Gambling is a significant public health, social, regulatory and policy issue. Associated harms can affect individuals and families, but also communities, sporting environments, digital spaces, treatment systems and criminal justice pathways.

Our research examines gambling behaviour and gambling-related harm, and encompasses theoretical and methodological approaches from psychology, sport and exercise sciences, criminology, public health, digital technologies, education, policy, mental health alongside lived experience and practice-based knowledge.

We work closely with academics, treatment providers, policymakers, practitioners, treatment providers, sport and justice organisations, third sector partners and lived experience experts from across Loughborough, the UK, and internationally. Although focused primarily on gambling behaviour, we also work in the fields of gaming disorder, digital behaviour, and other behavioural addictions.

Our vision

To produce rigorous, transparent, independent research, that can be translated into policy and practice, public engagement and treatment. To advance our understanding of gambling, and improve outcomes for individuals, families and communities affected by gambling-related harm.
