Background
I chose to pursue a degree in the UK after four years of classical studies in Italy. Despite changing course towards STEM studies, I consider my classical studies to be a key component of my education that integrates into the research skills required by the natural sciences.
Before taking up electronic engineering, I obtained a BEng in biomedical engineering at the University of Kent; during that time, I learned to apply the principles of control theory and systems’ engineering to the study of the human body, which would lead me to pursue a career in biomimetic systems engineering and communication in lossy media. Both interests inform my current research. Through the lens that my classical background provided me, I also developed an interest in human centric engineering and the impact that my research has on human activities. I acted as a Student Ambassador and Mentor, and picked up a range of both research and technical skills: Autodesk Fusion 360, CST Studio Suite, 3D printing, MATLAB and C programming, and proficiency in using laboratory instrumentation including LCR meters, oscilloscopes and digital multimeters.
My undergraduate thesis, titled “Intrabody Implant Communications to Skin Mounted Device” focused on the topic of signal transmission in lossy media with a focus on the human body for applications in medical-grade sensing and communications. The research I conducted at the time provided me with the initial knowledge that I am currently employing within my PhD research, titled “Biomimetics and Wearable Sensing”.
At the moment, I am focusing on the interplay between optical and RF communication for underwater communications, with applications in riparian remote sensing, remote-operated vehicle control, and underwater surveying and conservation.
