Milan Lovric

Dr Milan Lovric is a Senior Research Fellow in Microsimulation, working alongside Professor James Woodcock within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. His research employs large-scale agent-based modelling and simulation to evaluate policy interventions aimed at healthy, sustainable, and resilient cities. He holds a PhD in Finance from Erasmus University Rotterdam and an engineering diploma in Computing from the University of Zagreb.

Alongside his role at Loughborough University, he is a Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge (IMS Epidemiology). Prior to joining Loughborough, he was a research-focused Assistant Professor at Queen Mary University of London and the University of Warwick. He has also held research appointments at University College London (Centre for Transport Studies), the University of Southampton (Transportation Research Group), MIT (Smart Centre Singapore), the University of Oxford (Mathematical Institute and INET), the Santa Fe Institute, and Rotterdam School of Management.

Dr Lovric’s research focuses on the application of large-scale agent-based modelling and simulation to complex urban mobility, sustainability, and public health challenges. His current work advances the modelling of health, environment, and transport by expanding land use (SILO), travel demand (MITO), network assignment (MATSim), and environmental health exposure models. This integrated framework simulates how individual daily behaviours (such as commuting from home to work) and localised person-centric exposure to air and noise pollution intersect with long-term household dynamics and population-level health outcomes. These predictive capabilities allow for robust testing of policy interventions, from active travel infrastructure and urban greening to congestion charging and ULEZ, providing actionable, evidence-based insights to guide policy and planning across scales.

Dr Lovric has been an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for over 25 years, during which he has held various roles, including:

  • Co-founder, Interim Chair (2024–2025), and Vice Chair (2026–2027) of the IEEE UK and Ireland Chapter of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS).
  • Co-organiser, Publication Chair, Registration Chair, and Technical Committee Member for the IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety (ICVES 2025).
  • Contributor to the development of standards as a member of the IEEE P3538 Working Group on ‘Guide for Metadata on Road Accidents in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and Regions’ (2026–present).
  • Invited reviewer for leading IEEE journals and conference proceedings.
