Routes of Engagement
Working arrangement
Will ANY of the following apply to the work you have in mind?
- Significant (i.e. continued engagement critical to a core activity?)
- Predictable (i.e. guaranteed number of hours over a period of time)
- Regular (i.e. recurring not a one off) over a 12-week period or more?
Please answer this question with reference to the role/work itself
Points to Yes if:
- The work is critical to a core University activity (for example regular teaching, administration, research support, or operational delivery).
- There is a predictable pattern of hours or expectation of continuing work, even if part-time.
- The work will repeat (for example weekly sessions, scheduled support, termly delivery).
- The engagement is expected to last 12 weeks or more.
- The role forms part of a planned timetable, rota, or team structure.
- The work is similar to duties normally carried out by established members of staff.
Points to No if:
- The work is ad hoc, irregular, or offered only when needed.
- There is no guarantee of ongoing work or hours.
- Each piece of work can be accepted or declined independently by the individual.
- The activity is short-term or one-off, even if repeated occasionally.
- The requirement does not form part of a regular timetable, rota, or continuing service.
- The University does not rely on the individual’s continued availability.
You do not need to go through the tool if you have made a strategic decision to recruit an individual as an employee.
