Giving sports kit a longer life

About the partnership

Sports kit has an environmental impact at every stage of its life, from production and transport to use, storage and disposal. Across the sector, unused or discarded kit can quickly become a source of avoidable waste.

Through our partnership with kitround, Loughborough is working to support a more circular approach to sports kit. The aim is to keep kit in use for longer, improve circulation and encourage more sustainable behaviours across clubs, teams and communities.

What the partnership will do

Loughborough and kitround will work together to:

  • Reduce textile waste from unused or discarded sports kit
  • Extend the lifespan of equipment through better circulation
  • Support community clubs with access to organised, good-quality kit
  • Use data to understand and quantify environmental impact
  • Encourage more sustainable behaviours across the sporting community

Why kit reuse matters

Sports kit is central to participation and performance, but it can also create waste when items are replaced, stored, duplicated or thrown away before the end of their useful life.

By keeping kit in circulation, we can reduce waste, lower demand for new products and help more people access the equipment they need to take part in sport.

This partnership supports Loughborough’s wider commitment to climate action, resource efficiency and social impact through sport.

A sector-leading approach

As the first UK university to partner with kitround, Loughborough is helping demonstrate how universities, clubs and sports organisations can make better use of existing resources.

The partnership also provides valuable data to help understand the impact of reuse and inform future decision-making.

Help keep sports kit in play

Whether you are a club, team, student, staff member or community partner, you can help reduce waste by supporting kit reuse and choosing more sustainable options wherever possible.
