Dr Jamie Barker

Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Jamie’s main research interest is centred on: intervention effectiveness, group dynamics and leadership, and stress. His specific interests include, Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Social Identity in sport and performance settings, and mental health and wellbeing in elite and professional sport.

Professor Sophia Jowett

Prof Sophia Jowett

Professor of Psychology

An Associate Fellow and Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society, Sophia’s research focuses on interpersonal relationships in sport with an emphasis on coaching relationships. She also leads, and teaches on the module: The Psychology of the Coach-Athlete Relationship.

Anthony Papathomas

Dr Anthony Papathomas

Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Anthony’s research employs qualitative methodologies as a means to understanding the life experiences of marginalised groups and clinical populations. His work covers eating disorders in sport, the role of exercise in mental illness and physical activity promotion for people with a disability.

Dr Karl Steptoe

Sport & Performance Psychology Lead

Karl’s main research interest is in applied psychology and specifically the efficacy of interventions to accelerate expertise and to resist performance breakdown under perceived pressure. Karl also researches the development of psycho-social competencies in young people and professional practice.

Dr Clare Stevinson

Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity and Health

Clare’s research involves the psychological determinants and outcomes of exercise and sport among general, clinical and athlete populations. Specific interests include exercise in the management of mental health and cancer.

Dr Ian Taylor

Dr Ian Taylor

Senior Lecturer in Psychology

Dr Ian Taylor is an expert on the science of human motivation. He has written over fifty scientific papers explaining what drives humans and the optimal motivational states for successful and healthy living. This expertise has led him to speak about motivation on TV, radio, and festivals globally.
