Our Psychology of Exercise Rehabilitation MSc is designed to equip students with the psychological knowledge, skills and competencies required to work safely and effectively in contexts that employ exercise or physical activity as rehabilitation. Compulsory
Quantitative Research (15 credits)
The aim of this module is for the student to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, interpret, and conduct quantitative research appropriate for their field and level of study.
Rehabilitation Sciences (30 credits)
The aims of the module are to:
- Develop a broad but comprehensive knowledge and understanding of rehabilitation sciences including of the general functions, context and management of rehabilitation and rehabilitation services, and of the fundamental considerations, issues and scientific principles underpinning sport and exercise rehabilitation specifically.
- Be introduced to the role of rehabilitation and strength and conditioning in the treatment and recovery from musculoskeletal injury, in the treatment of chronic diseases, as well as in specific population groups.
Professional and Reflective Practice in Exercise Rehabilitation (30 credits)
This module aims to provide students with the practical knowledge and skills required to either rehabilitate athletes or support the exercise rehabilitation of injured, ill and/or patient groups and critically reflect upon and develop their own professional practice.

Qualitative Research (15 credits)
The aims of this module are for the student to:
- Gain a comprehensive and critical understanding of qualitative research design principles as applied to sport and exercise research.
- Gain a critical understanding and appreciation of the philosophical, ethical and stakeholder issues which underpin qualitative research, and how this affects qualitative research design.
- Critically review and communicate how different qualitative research designs inform understanding in sport and exercise research generally and in their particular field of study.
- Gain a critical understanding of how to apply rigor checks in qualitative research.
- Examine and analyse phenomena appropriately in accordance with research design.
Psychological approaches to rehabilitation (30 credits)
The aims of the module are to:
- Develop comprehensive knowledge of psychological factors pertinent to the rehabilitation process, including the individual and interpersonal determinants and consequences of effective rehabilitation.
- Be able to apply this knowledge to a variety of exercise-based rehabilitation scenarios and examples.
Research Project in Sport, Health and Rehabilitation (60 credits)
The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct and report on an original research study of an aspect of their MSc programme.
