Dr Richard Johnson

University Teacher in Graphic Communication and Illustration

Richard is an illustrator, author, and programme leader for the MA. His international award-winning work spans children’s publishing, advertising and editorial design. Richard’s research explores experimental wordless visual narratives aligned to unconventional reading experiences.

Andrew Selby

Andrew Selby

Senior Lecturer in Illustration and Animation

Andrew’s research explores illustration, animation and visualisation through service design, human-centred design and social anthropology. His work spans books, journals, exhibitions and industry collaborations. He was named 3x3 Educator of the Year 2026.

Karen Jiyun Sung

Dr Karen Jiyun Sung

Lecturer in Visual Storytelling and Applied Illustration

Karen’s work spans illustration, graphic facilitation, comics, reportage and participatory storytelling. Her internationally recognised work has earned awards in the UK, Japan and the US. Her research explores cross-cultural identity through storytelling.

Xiyuan Tan

Dr Xiyuan Tan

Lecturer in Graphic Design

Xiyuan is an illustrator and animator exploring how images communicate and create meaning in the world. They are a long-term contract illustrator for Visual China, and their work was shortlisted for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics poster competition.

Joanne Berry-Frith

Dr Joanne Berry-Frith

Lecturer in Graphic Communication and Illustration

Joanne's research explores play, art practice and life science. Holding MAs from Camberwell College of Art and the Royal College of Art, Joanne exhibits internationally, with work held in collections including the V&A, Arts Council England and Nottingham University.

O Haruna

O Haruna

University Teacher in Graphic Design

O is an animator, visual storyteller, and researcher investigating representation of marginalised groups using illustrative animation and collaborative methods. His broader interests cover visual narratives across traditional, as well as experimental contexts.
