Project details
The design of active vehicle safety systems and autonomous functions relies on deep understanding of tyre behaviour on a variety of surfaces, including snow and ice.
The project seeks to determine the most effective combination of physical modelling, testing, and machine learning to infer tyre behaviour on snow/ice using historic cold-test data, and to understand the causes of statistical variability in tyre behaviour in the cold. The novelty of the project lies in combining machine learning and analytical modelling to infer tyre behaviour on snow/ice from conventional testing, improving simulation capabilities while reducing costs and the carbon footprint of cold-climate testing. It will investigate correlations in existing data, conduct lab tests, and develop methods to characterise a single tyre sample, predicting tyre behaviour on snow based on compound, tread, and tyre size.
The project is jointly funded by JLR and the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) through an IDLA (Industrial Doctoral Landscape Awards) award, subject to contract. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Professor George Mavros, an expert in tyre and vehicle dynamics and Dr Miguel Martinez who is an expert in the application of machine learning techniques to engineering problems. The PhD researcher will also have the opportunity to spend up to 3 months working with tyre experts within JLR and to attend international conferences and workshops.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027.
The studentship is for 4 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £24,000 per annum, plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Excellent International candidates are eligible to apply but must cover the difference between UK and International tuition fees. Please note that due to UKRI funding rules, no more than 30% of the studentships funded by this grant can be awarded to international candidates.
