I chose Loughborough University because I was drawn to its strong reputation, outstanding facilities, expert lecturers, as well as its established network of academics and practitioners. With everything available on campus, there are plenty of opportunities for you to develop a wide range of skills. After completing my undergraduate degree at UCL, Loughborough felt like the natural next step to further build upon my knowledge and expertise.

The Physiology and Nutrition of Sport and Exercise MSc programme appealed to me because it offers extensive applied laboratory experience, where I have been able to develop strong hands-on testing skills. With its focus on current research and the application of scientific findings to real-world contexts, I have gained practical skills and a deeper understanding of the field, which will support my future career. It is particularly inspiring to learn about research conducted and published by our lecturers, as it helps connect our studies to real-world advancements.

I have also learned to critically evaluate evidence, recognise that scientific interventions are rarely perfect and adapt my approach based on the individual, setting and available data. The positive learning culture at Loughborough has encouraged me to be proactive, build strong relationships and contribute meaningfully to both research and applied practice. As a result, I feel more confident applying my knowledge to real-world problems and working effectively as part of a team.

Working on my final-year project with clinical populations has given me valuable experience engaging with vulnerable patients, strengthening my communication, professionalism and interpersonal skills. It has also deepened my understanding of ethical considerations, patient-centred approaches and the challenges of working in clinical and healthcare settings.

Loughborough University has advanced facilities including an impressive range of physiology, biochemistry, food and nutrition laboratories, as well as environmental chambers and body composition analysis facilities. These resources provide valuable practical experience with equipment and techniques that are widely used in both industry and research settings.

Albert

In terms of my career plans, I have a strong interest in Physiology and Nutrition including areas such as network physiology and neurological disease. I would ideally like to work as an Applied Practitioner or Researcher, focusing on lifestyle medicine to improving performance, health and disease prevention.

Alongside my future career, I hope to continue developing as a professional jazz pianist. During my time at Loughborough, I’ve had access to excellent piano facilities, which has enabled me to practise for two hours a day while completing my MSc programme. This has required real discipline and has challenged my character and patience but it has also allowed me to refine my technique, expand my repertoire and strengthen my performance skills. I strongly believe in continually challenging and developing the mind. After performing at the International Festival of Boogie Woogie and Blues Piano and recording a video in the Cope Auditorium that gained strong viewership on YouTube, I am always motivated to take on new challenges and find ways to improve.

I manage my academic workload alongside playing the piano by maintaining a structured routine and starting my day early. Focusing on important tasks in the morning helps me stay organised and productive, leaving time later for studying, practising and other commitments. My advice to other students is to find a routine that works for you, plan your time carefully and start tasks early rather than leaving them until the last minute.

The student community has also played an important role in my experience. I’ve made friends who actively support my musical interests, helping me stay motivated and confident and having such a positive and encouraging network has been a key part of my time at University. I also admire the focus and dedication of Loughborough students, which has positively influenced my own mindset.

For anyone considering studying at Loughborough, I would describe my experience as thoroughly enjoyable. I would encourage you to make the most of every opportunity, both academically and socially. There are many excellent societies to get involved in and for those interested in music, there are also swing and pop music groups you can join.

Albert will graduate from Loughborough University in 2026.
