I chose to study the PGCE with QTS in Mathematics because I wanted to take the next step towards becoming a Mathematics teacher. Loughborough also stood out because of its reputation as one of the UK's leading universities, as well as its support for my hockey ambitions. The opportunity to compete at a high level while balancing my studies made Loughborough the perfect fit for me.

The PGCE programme helped me develop a strong understanding of educational theory, communication, organisational skills and classroom management, enabling me to apply this knowledge in practice throughout my teaching placements. The support and guidance I received encouraged me to reflect on and continually improve my teaching practice, while also developing a mindset and commitment to ongoing professional development.

Prior to undertaking our practical school teaching placement, we had 3-5 days of Intensive Training and Practice (iTAP), which gave us the opportunity to observe teaching, understand the rationale behind different activities and explore a range of teaching methods. In addition, we completed a week in our Primary and our Special Educational Needs (SEND) school placements, as well as attending three INSET days at each school. These experiences helped us become familiar with school policies and procedures, meet staff and settle into the placement environment before starting our teaching practice. My two favourite modules on the PGCE programme were Mathematics Teaching in Context and General Professional Studies.

The Mathematics Teaching in Context module, undertaken during my first school placement, helped me develop my practical teaching skills through hands-on classroom experience. It encouraged me to reflect on my teaching practice and learn from feedback, which helped build my confidence and effectiveness.

I also greatly valued the General Professional Studies module, as it broadened my understanding of key aspects of teaching beyond the subject itself. The module enhanced my knowledge of key areas such as SEND, safeguarding, and supporting diverse learners, which I was able to apply directly during my placements and continue to draw on in my teaching practice since graduating. It also gave me greater confidence in adapting my teaching to meet the needs of all learners and support them effectively.

One of the things I valued most about Loughborough was its strong sense of community. The welcoming and supportive environment made my PGCE experience both enjoyable and rewarding, while the encouragement of tutors and fellow students helped me grow in confidence throughout the programme. I also loved being part of Loughborough's sporting community through hockey, as it gave me the opportunity to meet a wide range of people and develop a real sense of belonging. The support, encouragement and friendships I gained through the hockey community were invaluable, as it allowed me to balance my sporting commitments with my academic and career aspirations. A particular highlight was winning BUCS Gold this year after an unbeaten season. It was a fantastic achievement that reflected the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

As part of the PGCE programme, we completed two teaching placements in different schools. These 11-12 week placements provided extensive classroom experience, enabling us to develop and refine our teaching skills, build confidence in the classroom and apply the theory from the programme in a real school setting.

During my first placement, I was understandably nervous and lacked confidence in my teaching and delivery. I still remember teaching my very first lesson and feeling terrified. However, once it was over, I felt a real sense of achievement and knew that teaching was the career for me and as I reflected on each lesson and gained more classroom experience, my confidence grew significantly. Over time, I developed an energetic and engaging teaching style and became much more comfortable leading lessons.

Initially, I found it challenging to balance being approachable with maintaining high classroom expectations but with the support of tutors and experienced teachers, I developed confidence in managing this and established my own teaching style. One of my most memorable moments was receiving my first thank-you card from a student, which was a rewarding reminder of why I chose to become a teacher.

The most valuable lesson I learned from my teaching placements is that there is no such thing as a perfect lesson. This applies to both the planning and delivery. While most lessons go well, there will inevitably be occasions when things do not go as expected and that’s ok. By learning to reflect, adapt and move forward is an important lesson I have learnt.

I am incredibly proud to have secured a teaching position at one of my placement schools, allowing me to begin my career as a Mathematics teacher after completing the PGCE with QTS in Mathematics programme. I am also continuing my Loughborough journey by studying the Education (Mathematics) MSc, which is helping me deepen my understanding of education and further develop my teaching practice.

While balancing postgraduate study alongside a full-time teaching role can be challenging, the flexibility of the MSc programme allows me to fit my studies around my work commitments, with valuable support from both my tutors and colleagues.

My advice to anyone considering studying at Loughborough is simply to go for it! Loughborough offers a supportive community, excellent facilities and a wide range of opportunities beyond your studies. I recommend that you make the most of your University experience by getting involved with as much as you can and don't be afraid to ask for support when you need it. The opportunities and connections you gain can make a real difference to your student experience and professional development.
