I originally chose to study at Loughborough because of its world-class reputation and facilities.
Its many connections to sports clubs and opportunities for work placements were also an important factor.
What’s more, the teaching is outstanding. All my tutors had so many insights and a wealth of knowledge to share – and really made the effort to get to know and support me.
My course gave me a strong academic foundation as well as plenty of opportunities to gain practical experience, preparing me to progress into exciting professional roles within the sports industry.
This teaching approach, blending theory and practice, enabled me to apply my skills and knowledge throughout my industry placements and, subsequently, in my professional practice today.
The specific module that has proved the most useful is The Science of Performance and Injury. I use the knowledge and skills acquired throughout my day-to-day working life.
One aspect of the course that probably impacted my learning the most was the dissertation. It was great to take a deep dive into an area I’m really interested in – recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage. As well as deepening my understanding, it developed my research skills.
I acquired a lot of essential transferable skills along the way, including being able to reflect on my learning. This has helped me to progress and grow as a practitioner. I’ve also become adept at time management.
Being able to balance my studies alongside placement responsibilities certainly helped me to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines. I know that this has served me well in my professional roles, where managing multiple, simultaneous demands is essential.
On a personal level, the course increased my confidence and helped me to create friendships and professional connections with likeminded people.
I’d say that my studies really helped me to upskill as a practitioner and gave me the underlying knowledge required to progress my career.
Today, I am thrilled to be the Academy Physical Performance Coach for Watford Football Club.
I secured my first role, following my placement with Leicester Riders Basketball Academy which developed into a full-time role, and also worked with the British U18 Women’s Squad.
My advice to anyone thinking about studying at Loughborough would be to take advantage of every available opportunity and make the most of your time. Who knows where it may lead?
