Terms and Conditions for Loughborough University’s Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards
2026/27 entry (2026/27 Version)
These Terms and Conditions should be read in conjunction with the Terms and Conditions of Study.
These terms and conditions relate to the University’s financial awards made to international fee-paying students at Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught level, and UK fee paying students at Postgraduate Taught level.*
Please ensure that you read the information carefully and fully understand the terms and conditions you are agreeing to by either accepting your offer of study (for automatic scholarships) or accepting your scholarship (for application-based scholarships).
For the purposes of these terms and conditions, the term ‘financial awards’ is used to describe scholarships, bursaries, and/or awards provided by the University.
Loughborough University reserves the right to withdraw your financial award if you are subsequently found to be ineligible, or if these terms and conditions are not adhered to.
The University also reserves the right to amend the financial awards it provides on an annual basis or not award a financial award where a suitable candidate has not been identified.
General
The financial awards:
- Are granted at the sole discretion of the University, with the right to not offer or withdraw it. The University's decision in awarding a financial award is final and cannot be appealed.
- Are applied as a reduction to the first-year tuition fee, unless explicitly offered as a recurring award. No cash alternatives are available, and it cannot be used against maintenance costs, unless explicitly stated in the financial award offer.
- Are offered based on information in your application to study at the University and / or your financial award application. We reserve the right to withdraw a scholarship if details change, are found to be untrue, or if we are of the reasonable opinion that information provided is not accurate.
- Cannot be changed to the following academic year, even if your academic offer is deferred. There is no guarantee that we will offer the same financial awards for future intakes or that you will be offered a financial award again after deferring and reapplying for a financial award.
- Are offered for the first year of study only, unless explicitly stated otherwise. Financial awards are not automatically extendable if you extend your studies.
- Where offered to UG students for additional years of study, excludes the placement year, or duration of time during which students are retaking assessments, or re-sitting a year.
- Offered where a student is studying part time, is applied pro-rata, based on the credit value of modules for which the student is registered. The University reserves the right to determine the pro-rata financial award amount.
- Where two financial awards are awarded, one as a fixed amount and another as a percentage of the tuition fee, the fixed amount will be deducted from the tuition fee first, followed by the percentage amount.
- Are available to self-funded students only (unless the award is specifically designed for situations where partial or full funding is provided by an external organisation). If you are sponsored fully by an external funding body, for example a government, business, employer, trust or charity, you are not eligible to apply. If your situation changes during your registration and you acquire sponsorship, the University reserves the right to withdraw the financial award and your sponsor will then be required to pay the full tuition fee.
- Offered by the University or its partners, with the exception of the Alumni Discount cannot be combined with any other financial awards. If eligible and / or selected for more than one award , you will receive the higher value award only, with other offers automatically withdrawn. The University reserves the right to withdraw a financial award where a student is in receipt of multiple awards.
- Offered as tuition fee discounts will be deducted from the tuition fees charged to you and may be split across your payment instalments. We will not pay such financial awards to you directly. No cash alternatives are available.
- Offered will be withdrawn and you may be required to repay the scholarship amount, in full or pro-rata, if you withdraw from your course before completion. Any amount of the award that you do not receive or that you repay cannot be reallocated to other recipients.
- Where co-funded with an external organisation or donor, may require us to pass on details (name, title of award, course title, and academic school) to the external organisation for the purpose of selection and reporting.
The Scholarship, Bursary, and/or Award:
1. Eligibility for Consideration
To be eligible for consideration of a financial award you must:
- Hold a valid offer of study for a full-time or part-time course at the University.
- Meet the conditions attached to your academic offer, if it is a conditional offer.
- Have the right to study in the UK, including successfully obtaining a CAS and meeting UKVI requirements, where appropriate.
- Be registered as a full-time or part-time, self-funded student, with the exception of certain scholarships that are jointly or fully funded by external organisations.
- Successfully register on your academic course on the start date provided to you by the University and before the registration deadline.
- Meet the eligibility criteria as outlined on the respective scholarship webpages on the University website, including where applicable, being classified as an international student or as ‘overseas’ for fee purposes.
2. Eligibility for The Scholarship, Bursary, and/or Award
- Accept the financial award and its terms by responding to the award notification, and, where required, meet any scholarship conditions by the given deadline.
- Ensure deposit payments, where required, are paid within the timelines outlined at the point an academic offer is made or a financial award is offered, whichever is earlier.
- Inform the Admissions or Global Engagement team of any other scholarships or sponsorship currently held, or that you will be awarded at a later date. The University may adjust or withdraw your financial award if you are in receipt of other sources of funding.
- Pay all outstanding fees, less the applicable financial award, to the University when due. Non-payment of fees may result in the financial award being withdrawn, and full fees being charged to you. This may also result in other sanctions being applied by the University including the withdrawal of access to facilities and services, or being placed on Leave of Absence
- Provide for your living costs for the duration of your programme of study, if the financial award has no provision for living costs.
- Remain registered, successfully pass, and graduate from the programme. If you withdraw or take leave of absence, the financial award will be applied on a pro-rata basis.
- Seek permission before making any changes to your programme of study - this includes course transfers, changing between full-time and part-time study, or suspending studies. Where changes are made, the financial award may be withdrawn, and you may be required to repay the financial award in full. It is your responsibility to understand the financial impact of any request you make to change your programme of study.
- Comply at all times with all the terms and conditions you have agreed to. This may include satisfactory progress or academic achievement during your programme, and adherence with University regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Agree to represent the University as an ambassador, attending scholars and/or recruitment events, providing student profiles or testimonials, and supporting our marketing and outreach, if requested by the University, for up to two years after you have graduated.
- Agree to the University contacting you from the point you are offered a financial award and for approximately two years after your graduation for an update on how the financial award influenced your career. Your data will also be passed to our Alumni Team who retain information about your receipt of a financial award to support your lifelong relationship with the University.
3. Cancellation or Suspension of an Award
3.1 Withdrawal and Repayment
If the University believes you do not meet, you do not continue to meet, or you do not provide evidence to demonstrate you have met the eligibility criteria, your financial award may be withdrawn by written notice. You may be required to repay all or part of your financial award, or equivalent pro-rata, if:
- you have misrepresented your entitlement; or
- breached obligations agreed to in the University’s Terms & Conditions of Study and/or these terms and conditions relating to financial awards; or
- terminated your Student Contract; or
- withdrawn from your course before completion.
3.2 Changes to these Terms and Conditions
- The University will review these terms on an annual basis and reserves the right to amend the terms and value of the financial awards it provides to new entrants each year.
- By accepting an award you are agreeing to the terms set out in this document . They will be binding upon the recipient and the University for the duration they apply and no changes will be made from the point of acceptance.
- If you have been awarded a financial award, you will continue to receive the financial award on the terms stated at confirmation.
3.3 Leave of Absence
- An award-holder who takes approved leave of absence during the academic year will have their award suspended for the duration of the leave period.
- An award-holder who, having taken leave of absence, returns to the University in the subsequent academic year may have their financial award renewed or terminated, at the discretion of the University. If the financial award is renewed, the award holder must continue to meet the eligibility conditions currently in force.
