A placement year gives you the chance to gain real-world experience and apply your learning in a professional setting. Many students return with a stronger understanding of their subject and perform even better in their final year.
It’s also an ideal opportunity to explore different areas of the industry and experience what graduate roles are really like before choosing your career path. Many go on to return to their placement company after graduation.
While the department provides extensive guidance and preparation support, you’ll take responsibility for securing your placement through the application and interview process, helping you build independence and confidence for your future career.

F1 motorsport teams: AMG Mercedes Petronas, McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Williams Racing, Alpine, Aston Martin F1.
Manufacturers: Aston Martin, Bentley, Caterpillar, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, Toyota, Triumph.
Additional award
By undertaking a year on professional placement or working in industry, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you complete a year in industry you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).
