When I was researching universities, Loughborough stood out because of its strong reputation for engineering, excellent facilities, and supportive student environment.
I was particularly attracted by the Foundation Year route, which offered a structured pathway into an engineering degree while allowing me to build confidence in my academic abilities. After learning more about the university, I felt that Loughborough was somewhere I could grow both academically and personally.
I chose to do a Foundation Year because I wanted to strengthen my academic foundation before progressing into a full engineering degree. It gave me the opportunity to develop my understanding of key subjects, adjust to university-level study, and build the confidence I needed to succeed in a demanding engineering programme.
My Foundation Year was one of the most important parts of my university journey. Academically, it helped me develop strong study skills and a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts that would later be essential during my degree. Beyond academics, I made lifelong friends and became part of a supportive community. Some of my favourite memories include social events, night outs with friends, and the supportive environment created by staff in the Foundation Year team. Looking back, it was a year of growth, learning and making connections that lasted throughout my degree.
The transition to the full Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme was much smoother than I expected because the Foundation Year had prepared me so well. I had already developed effective study skills, learned how to manage my time, and gained confidence in approaching technical subjects. While the workload increased, I felt ready for the challenge because of the preparation I received during the Foundation Year.
During my studies, I completed an internship with Passron International. I worked within the International Trade department, where I carried out market research, analysed industry trends, and gained exposure to international trade processes and professional working practices. It was a valuable experience that helped strengthen my communication, analytical and organisational skills while giving me a better understanding of how engineering-related industries operate within a global business environment.
While I found the internship through my own research back home in Nigeria, Loughborough University provided excellent support by regularly sharing employability resources. These helped me better prepare for professional applications and interviews, and encouraged me to continue seeking practical experience alongside my degree.
After I graduate, I will be staying at Loughborough University to study MSc Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Long term, I hope to build a successful career within the engineering industry, contribute to innovative technologies and work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. My undergraduate degree has provided me with strong technical knowledge and practical experience through projects, while the Foundation Year gave me the confidence and academic foundation that made everything else possible.
The most valuable thing I have learned is that success comes from consistency. Engineering, like any degree, can be challenging but by staying disciplined, asking for help when you need it, and continuing to work hard, even difficult goals become achievable.
My favourite thing about Loughborough is the people. The strong sense of community is something that has stood out to me throughout my time here.
I play basketball and football, and I took part in IMS (IntraMural Sport) for my hall, Towers. I have also served as a Wolfson School Subject Student Ambassador, helping at open days. These experiences helped me develop my communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. Speaking with prospective students and their families taught me how to explain ideas clearly and build my confidence.
To anyone who’s thinking of studying here, I say: take advantage of every opportunity available to you. The Foundation Year is not just about academics; it is an opportunity to develop confidence, make friends, learn how to study effectively and prepare yourself for success in your degree. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and get involved in university life.
Overall, my time at Loughborough has been a journey full of challenges, achievements, friendships and memories that have made every step worthwhile.
