LLB Launch and Moot Court Opening

On 7 October we launched our LLB programme and opened our moot court with a demonstration moot

The evening began with a formal opening of the moot court by The Honourable Ms Justice Sonia Harris DBE.

We then held a demonstration moot with Ms Justice Harris on the panel along with Tim Smith, partner at law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, and Dame Vera Baird KC.  The moot scenario involved injuries caused by a rogue AI-controlled cricket ball made by Mr Anthony Starc, a PhD student and part-time lab technician at Loughborough University.

Counsel for the injured cricketers Dr Tom Frost, Senior Lecturer at Loughborough Law, argued that Mr Starc was responsible for the injuries and the university should be held vicariously liable. The panel agreed that Mr Starc was responsible, but preferred the arguments of Dr Mary Jiyani, Lecturer at Loughborough Law, and found that the university was not liable.

The moot was followed by a drinks reception, with speeches by Vice-Chancellor Nick Jennings, School of SSH Dean Justin Waring and Head of Law Rosemary Hunter.

A cake in the shape of a volume of law reports was cut, and the LLB students who joined the celebrations received certificates commemorating the fact that they are members of the very first cohort of undergraduates to study law at Loughborough.
