Extra-curricular courses

These are courses that do not contribute credits towards your degree.

University staff and students can join any of our extra-curricular language courses. Members of the public are currently welcome to join our Japanese courses only.

Japanese

Japanese is offered at two levels, over 20 weeks (the full year).

  • Level 1 - for complete beginners (2 hours per week)
  • Level 2 - assumes some prior study of Japanese, including basic grammar and Hiragana (1.5 hours per week)

Full entry requirements are listed on the online store.

Japanese is not available as a credit-bearing module, and is not assessed.

What our classes are like

Classes are small, interactive, supportive, and focused on using the language in realistic situations.

You'll get to know your teacher and classmates well over the semester and have the opportunity to learn in a range of ways. Full details on hours, assessment, and content for each level are in the module specifications (does not include Japanese). We’ll be in touch about timetables once you’ve signed up.

Finding your level

Finding your level: use our self-evaluation tool below to identify the right level. If your background doesn't fit neatly into the categories, it will tell you what to do next.

Once you know your level, sign up and pay via the online store.

A record of your learning

Because extra-curricular study doesn't appear on your degree transcript, we can provide a certificate of completion on request.

Studying for credit

If language modules are available as an option on your degree, you may be able to study for credit rather than paying the extra-curricular fee.
