Tim Clydesdale is Professor of Sociology at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). A first-generation college graduate, he earned his BA at Wheaton College (IL), and his PhD at Princeton University. Clydesdale has served TCNJ widely, including seven years as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and five years as Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies.

An expert on young adulthood, higher education, collegiate athletics, and American religion, Clydesdale is frequently invited to lecture at colleges, universities, and scholarly gatherings around the globe. He is the author of The First Year Out: Understanding American Teens after High School (University of Chicago Press, 2007), The Purposeful Graduate: Why Colleges Must Talk to Students about Vocation (University of Chicago Press, 2015), and with co-author Kathleen Garces-Foley of Marymount University, The Twentysomething Soul: Understanding the Religious and Secular Lives of American Young Adults (Oxford University Press, 2019).

Presently, Clydesdale is principal investigator of the Purposeful Student Athlete Project, a multi-university investigation of efforts to support the flourishing of student athletes and nurture their purposefulness upon graduation. Project co-investigators are Angela Morenz of Blackburn College and Michael Mitchell of TCNJ. 

During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Clydesdale will be collaborating with Professor Line Nyhagen, from the Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy, Professor David Fletcher & Dr Katelynn Slade from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, and Mr Simon Wombwell from Performance Lifestyle.
