Loughborough University is thrilled to unveil the winners of the LU-Arc Design Awards 2024, celebrated during our prestigious end-of-year show on 19 June.

This annual event celebrates the exceptional talent and visionary ideas of our architecture students, showcasing their innovative and forward-thinking design projects.

Award-Winning Projects Take Centre Stage

The LU-Arc Design Award, generously sponsored by Chapman Taylor’s London Studio, recognises outstanding work from our architecture students. This year’s event, featuring diverse student-curated exhibits, highlighted two exceptional projects: the "The Garden Rooms" by Alice Violet Ball and "Towards Syncretism” by Sohaib Khokhar. Both MArch year one students, captivated the judges with their remarkable skill and creativity.

"The Garden Rooms" by Alice Violet Ball

Alice's project captivated the judges with its exquisite craftsmanship and meticulous analysis. Her innovative approach seamlessly integrates nature with architectural design, creating a serene and visually delightful experience.

"My award-winning project combined green spaces and architecture to create a patient-centered space that fosters well-being for those undergoing ophthalmic treatment.
I was incredibly honoured to have been chosen alongside Sohaib, I have no end of gratitude for having been considered. It was an amazing and encouraging experience to receive recognition from Chapman Taylor for the research and work we produced this year."

"Towards Syncretism" by Sohaib Khokhar

Sohaib’s work stood out for its unique architectural style and compelling graphic presentation. His project reflects a profound understanding of cultural fusion in architecture, creating a space that is both visually stunning and intellectually stimulating. Sohaib says:

"Inspired by my grandparents' courageous immigration journey, my research delves into the challenges faced by the South Asian diaspora in Britain. It proposes design solutions that promote inclusivity and cultural evolution, bridging the past, present, and future.
I am beyond thrilled to receive the Chapman Taylor prize alongside Alice! This award is a testament to the incredible support from tutors, peers, and family."

Recognising Excellence in Innovative Design

Chapman Taylor, a leading architectural practice, sponsored the prize for Innovative Design Research. The high standard of submissions made it a difficult choice, leading to a well-deserved shared award for Alice and Sohaib. Their projects embody the spirit of innovation and unwavering dedication to excellence that Loughborough University fosters and nurtures in its students.

The awards were presented by Ben Ghibaldan and Sam Castling, Associate Directors at Chapman Taylor. Both Ben and Sam, with their extensive experience and passion for design, inspired and offered valuable insights to our students.
