IAS Guest Speaker Dr Anna Kuteleva (University of Wolverhampton) delivers a workshop on their research, organised and co-facilitated by Dr Serena Saligari (Loughborough University) -
How do you ask people about things that are hard to put into words: what an industry means to their city, or how they imagine its future? In this hands-on workshop, I introduce drawing and collage as methods in energy research. I draw on my use of drawing across several research projects, most recently in participatory workshops in Atyrau, an oil city in western Kazakhstan. I treat drawing as a way of seeing, a way of starting conversations, and a source of material for discourse analysis. Making something with your hands lowers the stakes: participants talk through their images, and abstract ideas become easier to share. We will cover designing prompts that do not presuppose what you hope to find, analysing images alongside the talk around them, and the ethics of visual research, including consent in politically sensitive settings. No drawing experience needed. Participants bring one question from their own fieldwork.
Dr Anna Kuteleva Bio -

Her research spans energy politics, including petrostates, oil cultures and energy transition, as well as gender and anti-feminist transnational politics. She is a fellow of the ESRC-funded Shifting Global Polarities Network Plus. Her fellowship project, Infrastructures of Belonging: Energy, Identity, and Connectivity in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, uses participatory visual methods to explore how residents of an oil city relate to place and industry.
