From Research to Entrepreneurship: Scientific Curiosity, The Journey and The Lessons

IAS Visiting Fellow Hal Kvisle Professor Vicente A. González delivers a seminar on their research -

At the beginning of an academic career, researchers often pursue a compelling problem and a research question they hope will underpin a sustainable programme of inquiry. Yet research rarely unfolds as planned. Initial questions may prove difficult to answer, and promising ideas may fail to gain the expected traction. Revisiting the problem, refining the question, or pursuing a different direction may open new opportunities—but success is never guaranteed. Adaptability and perseverance are therefore essential to building a meaningful academic career.

In this talk, I will reflect on how scientific curiosity about construction engineering and management, digitalisation and automation have shaped my research journey, including the unexpected directions it has taken. I will discuss how I have responded to setbacks, capitalised on emerging opportunities from scientific and entrepreneurial perspectives, and drawn lessons that have helped me refine my research agenda and sustain my academic development.

Arrivals from 11:45 am for a 12:00 noon start. For those joining in-person, lunch will be served after the seminar from 1:00pm.
