Professor Anthony Halog

Dr Anthony Halog is an internationally recognised sustainability scientist and systems engineer whose work advances the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy. He is a professor at the University of Queensland, Australia, where he leads research in industrial ecology, life cycle assessment (LCA), and AI-enabled sustainable systems. With over two decades of global research and more than 130 publications, his work bridges engineering, economics, and policy to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time—climate change, resource scarcity, and sustainable development.
His research focuses on designing intelligent, circular systems for sectors such as energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. He is particularly known for integrating artificial intelligence, digital twins, and systems thinking to optimise green hydrogen production, circular bioeconomy pathways, and waste-to-resource innovations. His work supports governments and industries in making evidence-based decisions toward net-zero and sustainable futures.
A Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and OECD, he has held visiting and collaborative roles across Europe, Asia, and North America, and is widely invited as a keynote speaker and expert advisor. He has led interdisciplinary projects funded by national and international agencies, fostering strong partnerships between academia, industry, and policymakers.
As an IAS Residential Fellow, he brings a transformative vision: to reimagine waste as a resource and to harness AI-driven solutions for sustainable materials and energy systems. His work is driven by a commitment to creating practical, scalable solutions that benefit both society and the environment.
During their IAS Fellowship, Professor Halog will be collaborating with Professor Anna Croft from the Department of Materials and Dr Jonathan Wagner from the Department of Chemical Engineering.
